SWOP SEMINAR for professionals
“ABOUT CARING”

ABOUT CARING seminar

The Dutch dance dramaturge Merel Heering invites us into the artistic methodology of caring. In times of crisis this approach to creating and co-creating becomes more and more important. In a society which distinguishes the personal from the professional, care work is often not considered ‘a part of the job’. Even in the performing arts field – thought to be the ideal site for practicing progressive values. In her keynote speech Merel Heering conveys why she considers practicing care as an act of resistance. She connects care to ethics and reveals ‘delay’ as her main strategy. Her work can be considered a call for care, as well as a call for day-to-day activism, both inside and outside the studio.

Performing Arts is a sector with a voice and an obligation– and especially when talking about young audiences. As a sector, we can introduce a point of view that can potentially have an impact on future generations.

The world is inter-connected, and we need to relate to people and nature with compassion and care – for others and yourself. So, whether you are a performer or maker, schoolteacher, festival director or activist, the methodology of caring is essential.
